Takes place in the days before Christmas near a little-known border crossing on the Mohawk reservation between New York State and Quebec. Here, the lure of fast money from smuggling presents a daily challenge to single moms who would otherwise be earning minimum wage. Two women – one white, one Mohawk, both single mothers faced with desperate circumstances – are drawn into the world of border smuggling across the frozen water of the St. Lawrence River. Ray and Lila… and the New York State Trooper who ultimately brings the two to justice.

This is the story of three gentle persons: Paul Rivers (Penn) an ailing mathematician lovelessly married to an English emigré (Gainsbourg), Christina Peck, an upper-middle-class suburban housewife, happily married and mother of two little girls, and Jack Jordan (Del Toro), an ex-convict who has found in his Christian faith the strength to raise a family. They will be brought together by a terrible accident that will change their lives. By the final frame, none of them will be the same as they will learn harsh truths about love, faith, courage, desire and guilt, and how chance can change our worlds irretrievably, forever.

This tale chronicles the trials and tribulations of Cole McKay, 15, an obedient son who yearns for the attentions of his emotionally remote father. Cole is by turns nurtured and abandoned by the rest of his family; his sister Kathleen, older derelict brother Jack, and rigid mother Margaret. As the tale unfolds each family member undergoes a crisis of their own, their individual arcs interweaving until a heart-wrenching climax.
